Make it your own... part 2

Chris & Cristi had their intimate wedding in Kauai. The details were simple yet striking. Bright, tropical flowers and an aisle made from orchids. Not to mention an open air restaurant overlooking the ocean where dinner was served to close friends and family. And the bride and groom... absolutely stunning.

Will & Alana Now this was a wedding to remember. A three day affair at Shawnigan Lake filled with tennis and swimming, buffet lunches and evening dancing. Surprise musicians at the end of the ceremony and a reception hall transformed into a crystal wonderland were just a few of the details that made this such a unique day.

Nick & Arli The sun shone brightly on this beautiful Fall day, making the ceremony at Van Deusen Gardens that much more spectacular. The reception was filled with so many personal touches, including tiers of cupcakes that were to die for. The speeches were both humorous and sentimental, the food so very tasty, and the dancing went into the morning hours.

Shaun & Kim Set in the picturesque Mayan Riviera, the wedding ceremony was absolutely gorgeous, taking place on a sandy beach on the Caribbean Ocean. Purple bridesmaid dresses and pastel roses, sandals and sunglasses, and a reception under palm trees and a starry night. Incredible.

Make it your own...

A million and one little details = one wedding. This might seem a little intimidating, but I think it's also a great opportunity to truly make this day about you as a couple. I mean, how often do you get to tell people where to sit, what to eat and when to leave?? But more than that, how often do you get to surround yourselves with all the people you love and cherish in one place at the same time? Not to mention choosing the colors and flowers and menu and music... so that every detail represents you and your partner. Okay, for some, this may be a nightmare, but for most others, it's a pretty fun time.

I always enjoy hearing about the planning aspect and learning more about the couple's style, therefore better understanding them and ultimately being able to capture them in ways to compliment this. The best part, of course, is the day of, and seeing how it all comes together, the flow of the people and food and music, laughter and dance... and so much love.

Every wedding is so very different. Here are a few details I loved from some previous weddings.

Alex & Shan This was an absolutely stunning garden wedding. They wanted it intimate and personal, keeping it to close friends and family on a sunny afternoon in Shan's parent's beautiful yard. All the bouquets were flowers the family planted in the spring, and instead of cake they had platters of lemon tarts... the same ones Alex and Shan shared on their first date.

Thomas & Angela This was a big Greek wedding, traditional, with an unconventional twist. Thom and Angela decided on a "first look", after which we had a great time driving throughout the city on a trolley bus with the wedding party taking fabulous photos before the ceremony. Hundreds of family and friends traveled far and wide and filled the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, a stunning venue with its traditional Byzantine Iconography. The reception details were simple and rich, with a jazz quartet warming up the guests to what would be a night filled with dancing and laughter. And wow, can they dance!

Adi & Mandana traveled all the way from Dubai, meeting their friends and family from all over the world here in Vancouver for their wedding at the Four Seasons. It was a traditional Persian ceremony with tons of lavish flowers, platters of sweets and pastries and many symbolic items. The reception was stunning. Pastel colored roses, silver table settings and a buffet to die for. The dancing started as soon as the bride and groom entered and went long into the night.

Clarke & Jinky's This wedding was so different from any wedding I've attended as either a photographer or a guest. It was somewhat of a 'secret', and the only people in attendance were 4 family members and myself. Under a willow tree on a private dock in Kelowna, Clarke and Jinky said their vows. The summer sun set her yellow dress aglow, toasting champagne and wandering through a nearby winery. The day ended at Quails Gate Winery for an incredible dinner, watching the Canada Day fireworks light up the lake. There was so much love and laughter shared on this day... truly beautiful.

Be Yourself

Without a doubt, the best photos are captured when you are able to relax and be yourself. Ultimately, I want to capture my clients with no walls, no guards... I want to capture the nuances and gestures that make them unique.  The way a couple holds hands, the look in a father's eyes as he gives away his daughter, the way one laughs and the affect it has on others. I want to capture you being you.

My favorite sessions are those where my clients are open and have fun, where they are committed to getting the type of photos they've always wanted. Alex and Shan were the perfect example of this. They were relaxed, they felt comfortable being themselves and were open in their love for each other, which created a beautiful energy that radiated in every photo. This is one of my favorite series of them from their wedding day... in the moment, beautiful and authentic... xoxo

Geoff & Nicole | Portrait

They showed me a painting of the pier where they met many years before, jumping off into the ocean to cool off on a hot summer day. The days when life seemed so much more simple. But even when the world got more complex with school and distance and work, they find themselves many years later, full of love, married and with a child on the way... and I guess it doesn't get much more simple than that.

Geoff and Nicole... you are such a beautiful couple with a truly special love... thank you for sharing an afternoon with me. I can't wait to meet the new addition... xoxo

Bon Voyage 2009 | Some of my Favorites Part 2

Once again, this selection is different each and every time I select my favorites... there are just too many wonderful moments and memories. I find I am drawn to those images that are imperfect, a spontaneous laugh or look... a moment caught off guard when you get to really feel someone. It is such an honor to spend time with someone with the intent of capturing something pure... it is a dance of sorts... one that I love and will never tire of.... xoxo.
